[This report comes from Patricia Nabti, Regional Representative to the IAVE Board of Directors from the Arab Nations Region. She can be reached at pnabti@gmail.com.]
IAVE is one of three strategic partners working together to coordinate The Arab Initiative to Foster a Culture of Volunteering 2010-2011, along with the Association for Volunteer Services (AVS) and the Arab Thought Foundation (ATF). The Initiative is a framework to capitalize on IYV+10 to motivate individuals, organizations, service institutions, schools, universities, government agencies, and socially responsible businesses throughout the Arab World to work together to strengthen and improve volunteering in the region.
Its six main objectives are to:
1) Bring together key people in volunteerism in the Arab World to share knowledge, experiences, and needs regarding volunteering in the region.
2) Provide basic training, as well as orientation to other training opportunities available, with the goal of expanding and improving the core of specialists in volunteerism in the Arab World, drawing on Arab cultural traditions and experiences, as well as expertise from within the region and worldwide.
3) Develop effective service programs for elementary, intermediate, and secondary schools, technical schools, and universities that foster a culture of volunteering.
4) Provide funding opportunities for those who would develop major sustainable volunteer development projects in their countries in 2011.
5) Provide information, models, support, and advocacy for the development of national volunteer policies in countries of the region.
6) Develop mechanisms for networking, resource development, sharing, collaboration, and mutual support among those who promote volunteering in the region that will last long after 2011.
Since one of the Initiative’s strategic partners, AVS, is the Regional Lead Agency for Global Youth Service Days, GYSD has been incorporated into the Initiative. Representatives of the Initiative attended the Arab Youth Summit at the Library of Alexandria in February where our Youth Coordinator spoke about GYSD and the Initiative, and we have had extensive online correspondence with youth leaders throughout the region. As a result, more countries of the Arab region are participating in GYSD this year and over 50 youth service projects are being implemented in
Other programs now on the Initiative calendar include:
May 14: A one day workshop for authors and publishers “Writing Children’s Books that Foster a Culture of Volunteering”. The workshop, which will be held in
July 12-18: The Learning to CARE Training Institute will train nine country teams of four people each to serve in their own countries as trainers for the development of effective school service programs.
September 15-19: The First IAVE Regional Conference for the Arab Nations will open in Beirut September 15, followed by a three day conference at the University of Balamand in northern Lebanon, and then a one day planning session for a team of researchers who will work together to design research on volunteering for the region.
In addition to those events the Initiative will have a number of ongoing programs, including online training and networking seminars, the collection of available resources to support volunteerism in the region, the translation of some of these resources into Arabic, the development of new resources in Arabic, and an online clearinghouse to make resources in Arabic easily available throughout the region.
We hope, through the Initiative, to have new IAVE members and an IAVE National Lead Agency in each of the 22 Arab countries, and we hope to have good regional representation at the World Volunteer Conference in

I read your newsletters with great interest. With the 2011 events approaching, I would like to suggest a shift from the emphasis on youth volunteers to what we call in Hebrew the “Third Age”, namely the very many retired people with some twenty more years to live, who have knowledge, skills and time, who can, and should, volunteer in the community.
We have good experience with the elderly volunteers, some projects we researched; [but also] I am aware of the shorter lives in developing countries.
Did you know that on the occasion of the first Volunteer Year, myself and eleven other people, lit torches at an Israel Independence Day celebration dedicated to Volunteering. We must do something like this in 2011.
Last, but not least, I have resigned from the chairmanship of the International Harp Contest and the Zimriya (world assembly of choirs), which I held as a volunteer for 27 years. They have now honored me to be the Honorary President.
This is a long e-mail. I still have no computer at home, please reply to drorafry@zahav.net.il
I shall be happy to hear from you.

I am writing to tell you about Volunteering England's new Volunteer Management Portal, funded by CapacityBuilders.
The Volunteer Management Portal is a new signposting tool for people managing volunteers in the third, public and private sectors. It aims to provide people managing volunteers with greater access to a wide range of information on support, training and development opportunities.
You will find the portal at http://www.volunteering.org.uk/vmportal.
To develop the content for the Volunteer Management Portal, Volunteering England and the 9 Regional England Development Councils undertook a comprehensive mapping exercise. During the exercise we mapped organization’s which provide support to people managing volunteers under the following categories;
Information, Advice, Guidance / Training Provider / Direct Services / Consultancy / Organisational Health Check / Peer Support and Networks / Publications and Resources / Other
Through the Volunteer Management Portal search facility users can search for organizations and/or the support they provide and will be provided with a link to their websites and a brief description of their work.
[We have learned of this effort through Volunteering Australia, our National Representative in
The Federal Government has been progressing with plans to develop a National Volunteering Strategy. This Strategy will shape the government's vision for volunteering over the next ten years. The strategy will be released to mark the 10 year anniversary of the United Nations International Year of Volunteers (IYV +10) which will be celebrated through the world in 2011.
The strategy development is now at the community consultation phase and Volunteering Australia is encouraging its stakeholders to participate by providing comment to the government.
